About

Gaustatoppen (1883 meters above sea level) rises majestically above the town of Rjukan and is often referred to as Norway’s most beautiful mountain. With its iconic silhouette and breathtaking views, it is one of the most popular hikes in Southern Norway. On a clear day, you can see about one-sixth of the entire country from the summit – a view few other Norwegian peaks can rival.

Easy Access from Stavsro

The most popular route to Gaustatoppen starts at Stavsro (approx. 1100 m.a.s.l.), located along the road between Rjukan and Tuddal. From here, a parking lot provides easy access to the trail.

Stunning Views All the Way

The landscape opens up early in the hike, and the higher you climb, the more spectacular the views become. From the trail you can see the mountains of Telemark, Buskerud, and even as far as Oslomarka in the distance. On the final stretch along the northern ridge, you are rewarded with panoramic views in every direction – with Hardangervidda spreading majestically out towards the west.
