With a growing focus on universal design and accessibility, Telemark offers opportunities for more people to enjoy nature, activities and relaxing breaks. Whatever your needs, there are accessible options to help make your visit both enjoyable and memorable.

Across Telemark, you’ll find a wide range of activities and places to stay that cater for guests with different accessibility needs. Whether you’re planning an active holiday or a relaxing weekend, there are plenty of options where universal design and accessibility are a priority.

Accessibility at family parks

Skien Fritidspark is one of Norway’s most accessible leisure parks, with universal design at the heart of its facilities. The park offers a wide range of activities designed to give as many people as possible the opportunity to take part. Facilities include free accessible parking, accessible walking trails and picnic areas, as well as a water park with accessible changing rooms, pools and saunas. There is also a therapy pool with a wheelchair ramp and a wave pool designed to provide easy wheelchair access to the water.

Although Bø Sommarland is not fully accessible, the park is actively working to improve accessibility. Wheelchairs are available to borrow, including a wheelchair suitable for use in the water, and paved paths provide easy access around the park. The park also supports the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, and assistance dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a lead and away from the water.

Foldvik Family Park in Stavern is a family-friendly animal and amusement park offering activities for children and adults. Meet farm animals including pigs, rabbits, calves, horses and llamas. In Sanseskogen, you’ll find activities designed for visitors with a wide range of abilities, including a wheelchair swing, accessible play equipment, a specially adapted digger, outdoor musical instruments and raised sand tables. The park also has accessible pathways.

Skien Fritidspark offers "great experiences for everyone"

Skien Fritidspark is guided by the vision “Great experiences for everyone”. The aim is to give visitors with disabilities the same opportunities to take part in the park’s wide range of activities.

Skien Fritidspark and Hotell Fritidsparken are located three kilometres from the centre of Skien, in peaceful surroundings with large green spaces and excellent opportunities for walks in the nearby forests and countryside. The facilities are designed to accommodate a range of accessibility needs, including those of guests with reduced mobility, visual or hearing impairments, allergies or asthma.

Large parts of the park have been designed according to universal design principles, with considerable emphasis placed on accessibility. The water park, walking trails and several of the outdoor activities are adapted for visitors with different accessibility needs who want to enjoy an active stay.

In 2018, Hotell Fritidsparken received the municipality’s accessibility award following the renovation of its restaurant and meeting facilities. Accessibility improvements have included hearing loops and ceiling hoists in guest rooms. The hotel has also expanded its range of accessible rooms to accommodate different needs.

The park has worked with several organisations representing people with disabilities, including the Norwegian Federation of Organisations of Disabled People (FFO), the municipal council for people with disabilities, the Norwegian Association of Disabled (NHF) and the Norwegian Association for Neuromuscular Diseases.

The Norwegian Asthma and Allergy Association and the Norwegian Association of the Hard of Hearing have also provided valuable input into the park’s accessibility work, including its kitchen, menus and dining facilities.
