Giant potholes and nature's own slides

Among the most unique bathing spots in Telemark, you'll find Jettegrytene (The Giant Potholes) in Nissedal. Over thousands of years, stones and gravel have carved smooth, rounded formations into the bedrock, creating natural rock pools of crystal-clear water. On warm summer days, you can wander across the sun-baked rocks, claim your own private pool, and explore a landscape that feels like nature’s very own water park.

Telemark boasts a rich variety of these naturally sculpted swimming spots. At the waterfall Dusanfossen in Notodden, the water cascades over smooth, polished rocks into pools that are irresistibly refreshing. In Skien, the waterfall Garvannsfossene forms an atmospheric river stretch where the water carves its way through rock and forest, offering a swimming experience wrapped in untouched nature.

And these are just a few examples. Dotted throughout the region, you'll discover small waterfalls, river pools, and smooth rock formations shaped by water over centuries—often tucked just off the beaten path.

Along the coast – smooth rocks, sandy beaches, and hidden coves

The coast of Telemark stretches from Langesund and Bamble in the north to the idyllic archipelago around Kragerø in the south. Here, you are met with a varied coastline of sandy beaches, sun-bleached rocks, and small, sheltered coves where you can discover a swimming spot all for your selv.

In Langesund, several centrally located bathing spots offer easy access and great conditions for both kids and adults. Moving further south, you'll find Hydrostranda in Bamble—one of Telemark's most popular sandy beaches, offering plenty of space and shallow waters.

Along the Coastal Path (Kyststien) in Bamble, you can wander between coastal rocks and quiet bays, pausing for a dip in the sea whenever you need to cool down. At the southern tip, Kragerø and its island archipelago offer swimming spots with sweeping views of islets and reefs—perfect if you want to combine sun-warmed rocks, history, and pure summer vibes.

But one of the best things about the Telemark coast are the smaller, unmarked spots. A hidden cove discovered along the trail. A stretch of rock you have practically to yourself. Here, the joy of swimming is as much about finding your own secret corner as it is visiting the most famous beach.

The island Jomfruland – a coastal gem at Telemark’s outer edge

Out in the archipelago lies Jomfruland National Park, boasting smooth pebble beaches, crystal-clear waters, and wide-open horizons facing the ocean. Here, the landscape feels vast and open compared to the mainland coast. Combine beach life with a stroll through lush oak forests and a visit to the iconic Jomfruland Lighthouse—and experience one of Telemark’s most distinctive coastal gems.

Lakes and freshwater beaches – peaceful summer days by the water

In the heart of Telemark, you’ll discover lakes with crystal-clear fresh water, sheltered beaches, and a more relaxed atmosphere than along the coast. Surrounded by lush forests and mountains, a dip here naturally becomes part of the journey—whether you're settling in for a full day by the water or pairing your swim with outdoor activities.

At Fyresvatn, you can take a refreshing swim after exploring Hamaren Activity Park, where accessible trails and viewpoints make the area easy to enjoy for all ages. In Vrådal and around Lake Nisser, expansive shorelines and family-friendly beaches offer plenty of room alongside striking mountain views. Welcoming freshwater beaches also await at Seljordsvatnet and around the Notodden area, perfectly suited for unhurried summer days.

Telemark’s lakes deliver a different kind of bathing experience—calmer waters and deeper stillness, yet richly immersive and full of atmosphere. Here, you can paddle a kayak, discover your own secluded cove, or simply soak up the sun from smooth rocks and sandy shores—in the middle of the genuine Telemark landscape.
