About

The TRE sculpture ("Tree") is Notodden’s newest cultural landmark, created by renowned Norwegian artist Erik Pirolt. Standing proudly on a grassy knoll where the Tinnåa River meets Lake Heddalsvannet, this 10.5-meter-tall polished steel tree makes a striking impression. Featuring a 2-meter-wide trunk and a canopy spanning 7 meters in diameter, the monument serves as a prominent landmark and an inviting stop along the waterfront.

The mirror-like steel surface reflects Notodden as it is today—capturing the surrounding natural landscape, changing skies, and passing visitors.

Symbolism and Historical Roots

The sculpture stands as a monument to creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Notodden, both past and present. Each element of the artwork carries deep symbolic links to the region's rich heritage:

  • Ironworks & Timber Floating: Cast in polished steel to represent the area's rich ironworks history and the tradition of timber floating along the Tinnåa River.
  • Turbine (Hydroelectric Power): Symbolizes the clean energy production that laid the foundation for Notodden's industrial expansion and UNESCO World Heritage history.
  • Watering Can (Fertilizer): A homage to Kristian Birkeland and Sam Eyde's groundbreaking inventions and the rise of Norsk Hydro.
  • Water Reflection (Waterways): Represents the Telemark Canal and the historic sea routes vital for regional transport and trade.

The roots rise from the ground around the tree, anchoring these historic symbols firmly into Notodden’s soil.

Part of "Tales of the Waterway" and the Industrial Promenade

The TRE sculpture is part of "Tales of the Waterway" (Vannvegens fortellinger), a long-term initiative by the Telemark Canal Nature and Culture Park that utilizes art, architecture, and lighting to enhance the canal landscape's cultural appeal.

The installation is also a centerpiece of Notodden Municipality’s Industrial Promenade (Industripromenaden). The project aims to transform the historic Jernverkstomta site into an attractive, accessible social gathering place that encourages play, activity, and quiet reflection.
